Becoming a Solution Architect: A Practical Guide for Developers
Moving from an experienced Developer role into an IT Architect role is a significant career transition. Developers typically have strong technical depth, but architects must operate at a higher level of abstraction, connect technology to business objectives, work across multiple domains, and make decisions that have a broader organizational impact. The ideal solution architect has a T-shaped or Pi-shaped profile. The horizontal bar represents breadth across technologies, business domains, methodologies, and architectural disciplines, while the vertical bars represent areas of deep technical or domain expertise. Developers often already possess one or more areas of deep expertise; the challenge is developing the breadth required to become an effective Architect. This course provides an accelerated introduction to "architectural thinking" and solution architecture, helping experienced developers make this transition and become value-creating Architects. The course also explores the different Architectural Disciplines and career paths available to IT professionals, from Solution and Digital Architecture to Enterprise and Infrastructure Architecture, together with the role of Certifications and professional frameworks such as TOGAF and The Open Group certification programs. By the end of the course, participants will have a clear understanding of what it means to think and act like an architect, how the Architect role differs from other IT roles, how to transition from development into Architecture, and how to build a long-term career as an IT Architect.
